Text: Book #405 Twentieth Century Love Songs

Ellie discussed the upcoming dates as shown on the list at the beginning of these notes and on the chalk board in the classroom. She requested titles for the gig at Moran Manor on April 9th at 2 p.m. She also circulated several papers around the classroom and asked those who wish to attend the Dawn View Brunch on May 1st to sign up on the back of the sheet so that Ellie can call and make reservations for everyone. The class will be CANCELED that day because of the brunch. Do not make an unnecessary trip to Keyboard World that day, please. Ellie also announced a volunteer banquet to be held by Moran Manor at Trinity Methodist Church on May 1st from 6-8 p.m. (the church is located at 34 Jones Street, Piedmont, WV). Call 301-359-3000 x219 to reserve your spot, please, by April 16th.

The Notables planned to honor Sunny Gallaher for her huge contribution of fulfilling the secretarial position for ten years by giving her a card and a check from the group. The occasion was held at a luncheon at Pizza Hut after class on April 8th. Thanks very much, Sunny for all your invaluable time and effort in keeping us straight all those years. Please continue to be with us at all events/executive committee meetings, etc. that you can make.

Rosie requested a list of names of people who ordered the #181 Country Book for class use as soon as they arrive. She has paid for these in advance and will expect each individual to pay for the books when they arrive.

Betty Twigg announced that the dues are due NOW ($25.00). Please pay promptly to Rosie. Thank you! Betty also inquired if people are interested in another trip to The Bowler on April 15th after class. Enough people indicated they would like to do that, and the date has been set. Please mark your calendars and remember to bring a bag lunch to eat at Keyboard World after class if you choose.

Diane Lynch was the first player today. Of the two songs suggested for today’s focus, she chose to play Mockin’ Bird Hill, which she played on the Director Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the Country Waltz with rhythm preset in the right hand (strings). She also had AOC activated. Nicely done, Diane. Good timing. Many thanks!

Lurene Seekamp played next, and everyone was glad to see her participating in class. She, too, played Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Director Lowrey Organ. Her registration was exactly the same as Diane’s (see above paragraph). Very fine job, Lurene. Thank you!

Madeline Boggess was called on next. Ellie said she can depend on Madeline to implement the playing techniques suggested by her in the previous class. Madeline said she always tries to fulfill the assignment. She played Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Sensation Lowrey Organ. Madeline had her registration recorded onto a disc. Her background rhythm was the Country Waltz at a tempo of 100. Her various right hand voices were customized and recorded into the Bank A sounds grouping. She made several pyramid chords and other right hand harmony, as well, and she utilized the transpose and golden harp features. Excellent, Madeline! Thanks so much!

Betty Twigg’s song, Your Cheatin’ Heart, was played on the Carnival Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was Country at a tempo of 100. Betty used the “smash” technique to cut off the instrumentation during a N.C. notation, right hand harmony, glissando, and AOC. Excellent! Many thanks!

Martha Filsinger had a bit of bad luck when she was playing her rendition of Your Cheatin’ Heart on the Sensation Lowrey Organ. She could not duplicate the sounds on the Sensation that she had used at home on her Star Dust Lowrey Organ. However, her background rhythm was E-Z Country, and her tempo was 86. She used a genius voice, which she expected to be Floyd Cramer’s piano sound, but it was more like a guitar sound. This befuddled Martha and she chose to give up and try again later. Thanks, anyhow, Martha. We all enjoyed what you played on the Sensation. The sounds were perfectly beautiful, even though they weren’t what you were after. Nicely played. Thank you very much!

Sylvia Twigg reported to the group that Boyd is recuperating from his pneumonia and doing much better. Since she was absent last week, she played the song from the April 1st class, Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. Sylvia played on the Odyssey Lowrey Organ on Country Swing background rhythm. She used the Rhythm Preset in the right hand, but she changed it to the jazz flute, which she liked much better. Her tempo was 99. Nicely done, Sylvia. Thanks!

Mike Gallaher’s song of choice was Your Cheatin’ Heart, which he played on the Country automatic rhythm, using rhythm preset as his voice in the right hand. His tempo was 106 on the Odyssey Lowrey Organ; his voices in the right hand included strings/organ sound. He also used a partial glissando. Excellent sound—well played, too! Thanks much!

Rosie Morgan played a simply gorgeous rendition of Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Sensation Lowrey Organ. She played entirely in the upper manual and used rolling chords to create her own rhythm. She did not use any automatic rhythm, of course since she was not using the lower manual at all. Her voices in the right hand were piano and strings. She also flipped octaves to enhance the sound. Marvelous to hear, Rosie. Super job! Thank you!

Shirley Hoopengarner played Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Legacy Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the waltz at a tempo of 100. Her right hand voice was strings. She added pyramid chords and right hand harmony in various places. Excellent performance, Shirley. Thanks!

Harold Hoopengarner outdid himself again today when he played Your Cheatin’ Heart on the Sensation Lowrey Organ. His background rhythm was the Ballad at a tempo of 72. His right hand voice was the rhythm preset. Extremely well played. Everyone in class agreed that Harold is doing very well in class! Thanks, Harold.

Emma Belle Murray, with Betty Twigg’s help, got set up to play Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Director Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the Waltz at a tempo of 94 and strings was the voice she chose to use in the right hand. Very well done, EmmaBelle. Many thanks!

The last player today was Joe Radcliffe, who just arrived back from his winter vacation in Florida. Everyone was excited to see that he and Dot are home again. He played Mockin’ Bird Hill on the Sensation Lowrey Organ. He played a customized introduction and played the song with the organ voice in the right hand. His background rhythm was the waltz, and his tempo was 104. He changed the right hand voice to something no one had ever heard before—Holiday Sounds. It was really neat, but he switched away from that and went back to the organ sound. So nice to hear your special sound and style again, Joe. Nicely done. Many thanks!

The lunch today was held at the Pizza Hut; next week we will be going to The Bowler after class. Some of the participants will bring a bag lunch and eat at Keyboard World before going over to The Bowler.

The assignment in the Book #405 (until our Country Book arrives) is Always In My Heart on p. 7 of the text. No doubt you will recognize the tune when you begin working on this song. Madeline Boggess asked if they would prefer to do a different song of their choice from the 181 book, would that be all right. The answer was definitely “yes” to that inquiry.

Have a good week. See you at the gig tomorrow and in class next week!
