Ellie went over the Dates to Remember as shown above and on the white board in the classroom. She reminded everyone that the next gig for the Notables is on July 11th at Willow Creek. Please send Ellie your titles for the program or bring them to class if you don’t have a computer to email the information. Of course people who don’t have computers will not see these updates, but those who do can pass along the message to people they may see between now and next week’s class.
The Gospel Workshop began today in class, and people were prepared with gospel selections of their choice; those not interested in the Gospel Workshop are encouraged to make a selection from any book they choose for presentation in class—to each his own!
Before getting into the Gospel Workshop, Ellie asked if anyone had a Memory Tune for us today. Janet Brant volunteered to play a song she has been working on—Music, Music, Music. She played on the Century Lowrey Organ on the Polka background rhythm at a tempo of 106. Nice job, Janet. Many thanks!
The next memory tune was played by Rosie Morgan, who played In A Little Spanish Town on the Star Dust Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the Latin (Rhumba/Beguine variation), and her tempo was 108. Very pretty, Rosie. Excellent job, too. Thanks!
Mike Gallaher said he’d play Happy Birthday again this week to see if he still remembers it. He does! He played on the Century Lowrey Organ with the Easy Button Setting and an organ voice—no automatic background rhythm. Great Mike! Thanks!
The final memory tune today was played by Faith Whitacre, who played Just A Closer Walk With Thee on the Star Dust Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the Waltz at a tempo of 69. She used glissando’s several times throughout. Her voices in the right hand included the Marimba and bells. Excellent, Faith! Many thanks.
Moving right along to the selections for today, Janet Brant was the first player for this portion of the class. She played I Asked The Lord on the Century Lowrey Organ; her background rhythm was Soft ‘n Easy at a tempo of 72 and rhythm preset in the right hand. She played a customized ending. Gorgeous song. Janet spoke of how much she loves the lyrics to the song and how well they apply to life. Excellent, Janet. Thank you very much!
Sylvia Twigg’s song was He Leadeth Me O Blessed Lord. She played on the Premier Lowrey Organ. Her voice in the right hand was the Electric Piano and the Easy Button. Wonderful, Sylvia. Many thanks!
Rosie’s song, though not truly a Gospel song, was entitled God Help The Outcast from the show, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Rosie played her beautiful selection on the Star Dust Lowrey Organ, using her registration which was recorded onto a disc. Her background rhythm was the Country Waltz; she played in different octaves to enhance the sound and used the split keyboard feature, too. Her voice in the right hand was the trumpet in the lower manual and piano/strings in the upper manual. Her tempo varied through the performance from 80-49 and even lower than that. Rosie always uses right hand harmony and frequently uses the foot pedals, as well. Excellent, Rosie! Thank you!
Betty Twigg’s selection was My Faith Looks Up To Thee (written in Standard Notation). Nice challenge for you, Betty. She played using the Soft ‘n Easy background rhythm at a tempo of 64 with the piano voice in the right hand. Betty added right hand harmony here and there throughout and a fade out ending. Excellent, Betty. Many thanks!
Mike Gallaher chose to play an easy listening song from his book #194 – 67 Songs. The song was entitled Play Gypsies – Dance Gypsies. Nice song, Mike. He played on the Century Lowrey Organ on the Fox Trot background rhythm (without orch. plus). His tempo was 106. Mike’s right hand voice was the organ sound and his ending was a fade-out. Excellent, Mike. Thank you very much!
Something Beautiful was the title of Emma Belle Murray’s song, which she played on the Premier Lowrey Organ. Her background rhythm was the Soft ‘n Easy with rhythm preset (piano). Her tempo was 64. Nicely done, Emma Belle. Thank you!
Joe Radcliffe selected a medley from his Andy Griffith book entitled Shall We Gather At The River/Will The Circle Be Unbroken. He played the song on the Star Dust Lowrey Organ on the Bavarian Polka at a tempo of 89. His tempo was 89 and he played a customized ending. Great, Joe. Thanks very much!
Elaine Twigg’s song was In The Garden. She played on the Premier Lowrey Organ, and her background rhythm was the Waltz at a tempo of 99. Her voice in the right hand was strings. Excellent, Elaine. Many thanks!
Faith Whitacre played Sheltered In The Arms of God on the Star Dust Lowrey Organ. She used the Ballad (Soul Ballad) and played at a tempo of 86. Her voice in the right hand was Preset 9 (organ sound with AOC). Excellent performance, Faith. Thanks so much!
For next week, Ellie suggested that the students locate copies of Nearer My God To Thee and Faith of Our Fathers. We will play those in ensemble format in next week’s class on July 8. Another song we may try is Whispering Hope. Of course, the option is always open to select any song of your choice from any book throughout the summer.
Lunch next week will be at Cici’s.
Happy Fourth of July, everybody! Be safe!
